Year 6
Numeracy: Children will be reinforcing and developing their understanding of place value in number work, particularly larger numbers to a million. Comparing numbers and adding and subtracting powers of 10. Understand and use all four number operations (add, subtract, multiply and divide) and continue to develop problem solving skills. In fractions decimals and percentages children will be changing an improper fraction to a mixed number and vice versa. Reduce fractions by cancelling. Use decimal notation for tenths and hundreths. Give a decimal lying between two others e.g. between 3.4 and 3.5 and solve simple problems involving ratio and proportion. We will also be covering shape, space and measure.
Literacy: In fiction we will be using the book ‘Danny the Champion of the World’ by Roald Dahl to explore a range of punctuation, grammar, character profiles, story style and design. We will be comparing and evaluating the story with the film version. We will also be using familiar texts to develop reading and complex comprehension skills. In non-fiction we will be reading and writing autobiographies, diaries, letters recounts and non-chronological reports. There will also be weekly spellings of word families.
Science: During micro-organisms children learn that there are many very small organisms called micro-organisms which feed, grow and reproduce and which may be harmful or beneficial. Children will also be learning more about dissolving and reversible and irreversible changes.
P.E.: In P.E. children will be improving their defending and attacking skills through Hi-Fives. They will have swimming lessons to build up their confidence and develop basic strokes. Girls and boys will also be taking part in after-school football and Hi-Fives activities and matches.
Geography: Focus for this term is rivers. Children will be learning about what a river is, how a river changes down its course, people and rivers and the water cycle.
History: Topic on Victorians starts next term.
Art: Sketching – People in action. Children explore how to convey movement in their work. They explore dynamic activities such as sport, dance, drama and music as a starting point for making work in two dimensions.
I.C.T.: Children will learn to create a multimedia presentation using text, images and sounds. They will be taught to create links between pages and show sensitivity to the needs of their audience.
Design Technology: Children will be designing and making slippers next term.
Music: Children learn the important role played by lyrics in songs. In particular they focus on the different functions of lyrics in conveying mood, expressing attitude or telling a story.
Religious Education:
The three main topics for this term will be Homes and families, Signs and symbols and visitors.
Homes and families – in this topic the children explore the importance of giving and forgiving in family life. They hear about God, who never stops loving. They will be able to explain how the parable of the Prodigal Son describes God’s love and forgiveness and how scripture invites Christians to be like God.
Signs and symbols – The children will explore the significance of universal symbols. They will be able to describe symbols in the celebration of Baptism and Confirmation and explain why they are significant, particularly the anointing with chrism.
Visitors – Children discuss the purpose and value of visiting. They use the Isaiah passages to describe what the people expected from the promised one. They will be able to describe how the church prepares for and celebrates the coming of Jesus.
