Curriculum Newsletter Autumn Term 2007/8
Literacy
In Literacy this term we will be focusing on fiction and stories with familiar settings. In the second half of the term the focus will be on non-fiction, information books, instructions, labels and lists.
We will also be following a new phonic scheme called “Letters and Sounds” which has been produced by the department for Education and Skills. This term we will learn at least 19 letters and also read some “vc and cvc” words. We will also read some high-frequency “tricky” words.
Numeracy
In the first half of the term we will be learning to read and write numerals from 0-20. Also to understand the operations of addition and subtraction. In measures and shapes we will be comparing two lengths and use everyday language to describe 3D shapes.
Science
In Science we will cover two topics ‘Ourselves’ and ‘Light' and 'Dark’. In the ‘Ourselves’ topic we will learn about our senses and in ‘Light and Dark’ we will learn about different light sources.
History (1st half term)
In History our topic is ‘How are our toys different from the past?’ We will be comparing toys from the 1950’s with those of the present day.
Geography (2nd half term)
In Geography our topic is ‘Around our school.’ The children will be learning about their immediate environment i.e. school.
Art
In Art our topic is ‘Self Portrait’. The children will sketch themselves using a variety of drawing pencils. In the second half term we will be doing ‘Christmas Art’.
P.E.
Our P.E. topic is Throwing and catching. The children will be developing their skills of throwing and catching showing control and accuracy with basic actions.
Top Dance – Penguin Visit – To explore and respond imaginatively to a range of stimuli.
Music
In our Music this term we will be investigating a variety of sounds using percussion instruments.
BBC Programme – Puss in Boots. Learning songs to accompany the story
ICT
In ICT we will be learning about how to use a computer and identify the main parts of the computer. The children will also learn to use a word processor to assemble text held in a word bank.
DT
Our topic is to make moving pictures.
Modern Foreign Languages
This year the children will be introduced to Spanish. They will learn simple greetings, numbers, names for objects and simple instructions.
PSHE
Healthy Lifestyle . We will be recognising and valuing differences in their own and others’ lifestyles and cultures relating to health.
Religious Education
The three topics for this term are :
Homes and Families - Signs and Symbols - Visitors
Homes and Families : We will be talking and learning about the love and care shown in the family and the love and care God shows for every family.
Signs and Symbols : We will be discussing the importance of signs for our school and our school family. Also the signs the church family uses at Baptism.
Visitors : We will be thinking about the importance of preparing for a visitor coming and that Advent is the time we prepare for Jesus’ coming at Christmas.
