Year 3 Autumn Term 2009
In Literacy the focus will be on both fiction and non-fiction. The children will be comparing story settings, writing settings, generating ideas, expressing views about a story, exploring presentation of dialogue, using prefixes, distinguishing between rhyming and non-rhyming poetry, writing poems, preparing and presenting playscripts, recognizing differences between prose and playscript, presenting dialogue, writing own dialogue and calligrams and shape poems. In handwriting they will be practising the first joins. The non-fiction work will emphasis reports, reading for information, the writing process and recounts.
In Maths the focus will be on Numeracy. The children will be practising and developing oral and mental skills, they will be taught about place value, ordering, estimating, rounding, reading numbers from scales, understanding + and -, strategies, money and ‘ real life ‘ problems, making decisions, checking results, measures, inc. problems and shape and space. In the second half of the term the concentration will be on counting, properties of numbers and number sequences, reasoning about numbers, multiplication and division, fractions, time including problems, handling data.
In History the work will be based on studying ‘Invaders’ with particular reference to The Romans.
In Geography we will be looking at our local area and basing our work on settlement, transport (road and rail links), and the industrial and commercial aspects of the community.
In Science the children will be looking at teeth and healthy eating and it would be particularly helpful if the topic could be discussed at home so the children are aware of healthy options and choices.
The topic of rocks and soil will also be studied by the children
In MFL the children will be learning conversational Spanish.
In Art the children will be looking at portraits and observing details about others to enhance their own observational sketches.
In ICT the children will be using the program Word to word process.
In Music the children will be listening to and exploring descriptive sounds using the BBC Time and Tune programmes.
In PE the focus will be on learning and practising hockey skills and dance.
The Design and Technology unit will be linked to the Science topic and will be looking at making a healthy sandwich.
In PHSE the children will be discussing healthy lifestyles and how they can begin to take responsibility for their own.
RE
The three topics for study this term will be Myself, Invitations and Birthdays.
In the topic of Myself, the children will recognise a wide range of emotions and talk about some emotions they have felt and how they have responded to these emotions. The children will learn about God’s unchanging love for each person no matter what happens or how they feel. Learning outcome: Children know and understand the church’s teaching about God’s unchanging love for each person throughout life.
In the topic of Invitations, children will recognise a variety of invitations and reflect on what different invitations are inviting them to do. Children will think about the invitation to be part of the Christian family. .Learning intention: children know and understand Baptism and Confirmation as the call to belong to the church.
The topic of Birthdays looks at special birthday celebrations and at what makes a birthday special. They will learn about Advent being kept by the church in preparation for Christmas. Learning intention: children know and understand the Church’s teaching about Advent and Christmas: the Church’s seasons of preparing for and celebrating the coming of Jesus.
