Curriculum News Letter - Spring Term 2009

 

Y1

 

Language/Literacy:

In Literacy this term we will be concentrating on fiction and poetry.   Traditional stories and rhymes, fairy stories and poems with familiar predictable and patterned language from a range of cultures.   Later in the term the focus will be on non-fiction – information books, reports and simple dictionaries.    We will also be following a new phonic scheme called “Letters and Sounds” which has been produced by the department for Education and Skills. This term we will  be working on Phase Three  sounds and also  blending and segmenting  some “vc and cvc” words. We will also read some high-frequency “tricky” words.

Numeracy:                    

In Numeracy we will be counting reliably up to 20 objects.   Reinforce the operation of addition and subtraction.  Begin to choose the appropriate number operation to solve problems.   In shape and measure we will be comparing two or more masses using direct comparison.   Also we will visit 2D and 3D shapes.   In money we will recognise 1p, 2p, 5p, and 10p coins and equivalent values.

Science:

In Science we will cover two topics, sorting and using materials and ‘push and pull’.   In the sorting and using materials topic we will learn about the characteristics and use of a range of materials.   In the ‘push and pull’ topic we will investigate forces. 

History: 

In History we will be looking at homes long ago and we will be comparing the differences and similarities between  then and now.                                                   

Geography:

In geography we will be following a programme called “Where in the World is Barnaby Bear?

Art:

In art this term we will be learning about sculpture. We will be looking at different kinds of sculpture including those made of  natural materials.         

I.C.T.: The topic is the information around us.   We will learn that information exists in a variety of forms, radio, newspapers,  TV etc. We will be exploring the different media.

P.E.:

In PE this term we will be developing our skills in gymnastics through the theme of balance. We will also be developing our skills in net and wall games.

D.T.: 

In Design and Technology this term we will look at making ‘homes’ using shoeboxes and other materials.

Music:

We will continue to follow the music programme given to us by the peripatetic teacher from Sefton.

PHSE:

We will be looking at feelings and relationships.

Modern Foreign Language:

We will continue to develop our Spanish, learning new phrases and greetings.

R.E.:      

The three topics are :  Journeys  Communion  Growing

 

Journeys      In this topic, the children explore journeys people make together. They hear about how the parish family journeys to 

church on Sunday and how the Holy Family journeyed to the Temple.

 

Communion   In this topic , the children explore their experience of coming together, “gathering” with others at home and in school They learn about people coming together, “gathering”, at Mass.

 

Growing    In this topic, the children explore the different ways they grow: body, skills, mind and heart. They learn about Lent as a time to grow more like Jesus and be ready to celebrate Easter.
