Literacy

Fiction - This term the children will be reading a variety of myths and legends.  They will be given the opportunity to write their own myth and legend based on myths and legends read.  This will be followed by Narrative Poetry. They will read a range of narrative poetry, and will perform them in a variety of ways. The children will also be reading and writing their own fables and reading and identifying the features of traditional tales.

Non-Fiction – The children will be finding out what an explanation text is and how it is organised; its features and will be writing their own explanatory texts.  This will be followed by Researching Reports.  By the end of the unit, the children should be able to write their own non- chronological report and locate information in given reports.

 

Numeracy

The children will develop their calculator skills; use all 4 operations to solve money and real life number problems and explain their working out; order a set of fractions and mixed fractions and understand equivalent fractions; visualize 3D shapes from 2D nets. Use units of time; read the time on a 24-hour digital clock and use 24-hour clock notation, such as 19:53. Use timetables. Suggest suitable units and measuring equipment to estimate or measure length, mass or capacity.  Discuss the chance or likelihood of particular events.  Recognise and extend number sequences formed by counting from any number in steps of constant size, extending beyond zero when counting back. Make general statements about odd or even numbers.

 

Science - Changing State: the children learn the main processes involved in solids, liquids and gases changing state through various processes.  Changing sound: the children will learn that sounds are produced by vibrations and that these vibrations travel from the source through a variety of materials. Musical instruments are used to illustrate the range of ways of producing sounds and how pitch and loudness can be altered.

 

RE Celebrations – The children will be gaining a greater understanding of the importance of celebration in people’s lives and about celebrations that mark important times in the life of a Christian.

Thanksgiving – The children will learn and understand giving and receiving thanks and the Eucharist: the great act of thanksgiving that Christians are challenged to live.

Self-Giving  - Children will know and understand the reasons for giving and for refusing to give and Lent and Holy Week: the Church’s seasons for giving in order to celebrate the sacrifice of Jesus at Easter.

 

Geography – Water - The children will  learn about the importance of clean water and investigate how it is supplied. They also consider who owns and manages water and contrast water use at home with use in less economically developed countries

 

Art Containers - explore the craft tradition of making vessels and containers. They develop their own de­signs and build a three-dimensional form to represent a vessel or container that will hold something special that they own.

 

Design and Technology –  The children will be learning about the ingredients required to make bread and will be making their own.  They will use a range of skills and techniques using basic food tools and equipment and taking account of appropriate safety and hygiene issues.

 

Music Composing – the children will be learning how a composer composes music and they will produce their own composition in the form of symbols and use instruments to play it.

 

ICT

Control and monitoring - how to control simple devices. They learn how to control devices by turning them on and off according to a set of instructions using software called Flowol. This will be developed so that children understand how to sequence a set of instructions to get a desired outcome.

 

Spanish

The children will continue with learning their numbers but will also be learning how to say the time, the names of school subjects and stating their preferences.

 

PSHE

Drug Awareness – the children will be made aware of the use of and danger of both legal and illegal substances and how to keep themselves safe.
