RECEPTION CURRICULUM NEWSLETTER-SUMMER TERM 2008

RE-Our topics this term are:

Holidays/Holydays

The children will be talking about holidays as happy days and talking about things they like to do, or places they like to go. They will know that people are happy at Easter and that Jesus’ friends were happy on Pentecost Day.

Building Bridges

The children will be able to name the friends they have and describe some of the things they do with their friends. They will be able to recall what Jesus and his friends did together and the rule Jesus gave to his friends.

Difference

The children will be describing themselves and the ways in which they differ from one another. They will be able to talk of how God makes each person different and special and be able to recall what Paul said about God’s children.

Role play

We will be having two role play areas within our classroom-starting with a Garden centre and a home corner. The other will be decided by the children depending on their own interests after whole class discussions. We will also be using our outdoor environment for learning throughout the curriculum.

Communication, language and Literacy

This term we will be focusing on traditional tales, poems, and non fictional work. We will be focusing on developing their ability to write simple words and trying to spell more complex words. We will be continuing with our daily phonics work. We will be looking at questions-who, why, what, where and when. We will beginning to write captions and labels and forming simple sentences using capital letters and full stops. We will be continuing our handwriting practice and phonic skills

Mathematical Development

We will be using ordinal numbers-first, second etc, and focusing on addition (combining two groups of numbers)and subtraction skills (taking away). The children will be describing positions of objects e.g. under, beside, next to, and the ability to order 2 or 3 items by weight or capacity. We will be developing their skills of finding 1 and 2 more/less than a given number and developing their skills with numbers to 20.

Creative Development

This term we will be looking at sound patterns and repeating sounds and creating building sounds. We will also be following a BBC scheme looking at the outdoor environment. We will be appreciating the work of Van Gogh and creating and developing our own ideas through our play and work with others.

Physical Development

We will be developing our skills using a ball- throwing, catching, rolling, stopping and starting. We will be also developing our running skills and learning about keeping healthy and active. We will be using these skills in our hall time, classroom and within our outdoor environment.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

This term we will be investigating growing, change over time and in particular related to our Garden Centre role play are and our classroom environment. We will be investigating objects and materials outdoors and those that are used for construction. We will be investigating why things happen and how things work within our school environment. We will be developing our computer skills looking at moving around a simple computer program and and how to program a toy to with simple instructions, we will also be beginning to look at simple mapping skills.

Personal, social and emotional development

This term we will be focusing on developing children’s quiet reading skills and concentration levels. We will be developing their skills of working with a partner and sharing and discussing ideas with each other. We will be looking at morals behind stories. We will also be looking at medicines and what goes into our bodies and what goes onto my body. We will also be developing our independent skills and continuing to dress/undress ourselves.
