Year 2 Curriculum Newsletter – Summer Term 2010

 

 

LITERACY  -  We will be looking at: fiction and a variety of poems by significant children’s authors, non fiction books including non-chronological reports, turning statements into questions, matching verbs to nouns/pro-nouns, using standard forms of verbs and using capital letters and full-stops correctly. We will also be developing our story telling skills and linking this to our ICT work. We will be working on our individual targets related to sentence work.

 

NUMERACY  -  We will be describing and extending simple number sequences.  To recognise odd and even numbers and to order whole numbers to at least 100.  To use knowledge that addition can be done in any order and to state the subtraction corresponding to a given addition and vice versa.  To estimate, measure and compare masses using standard units.  To use mathematical vocabulary to describe direction and movement. To explain how a problem was solved.  To choose and use appropriate operations and efficient calculation strategies.

 

SCIENCE  -  The children will be learning about plants and animals in their immediate environment and how differences between places very close to each other result in a different range of plants and animals being found. Throughout this term the children will become more aware of the huge variety of living things within their local environment and of differences between them. They will learn that although individual living things are different there are similarities which can help to sort them into groups and that this is helpful.

 

ART  -  We will be exploring the idea of Nature as a designer and will be investigating using natural objects.  They will learn how to make observations of natural objects and use their observations as the basis for textile design

 

HISTORY  -  We will be looking at the lives of several famous people and examining the effects that their inventions have had on the lives of others.

 

GEOGRAPHY -  The children will be learning about the seaside and it’s  geographical context but uses a historical perspective to help children understand how seaside places have evolved over time. The activities at the end of the unit have a more global emphasis which will be particularly suitable for more able children.

 

MUSIC  -  During this term the  children explore the duration of vocal and instrumental sounds. They play percussion instruments with control and sensitivity, paying attention to long and short sounds. Towards the end of the unit the children begin to organise their sounds within a steady pulse. They will experiment with  recording their sound sequences using symbols.

 

PE  - Athletics and ball skills. We will be practising the skills of running, jumping and hopping.  The children will also be developing their ball skills- focusing on kicking and striking. We will also be developing our skills related to jogging and sprinting in preparation for our School Sports Day.

 

ICT  - The children will be learning to use words to communicate messages and recognise that ICT lets them correct and improve their work, as they are working or at a later date. We will also have opportunities to discuss their experiences of using ICT. The Children will be able to apply what they have learnt in this unit when writing stories with a clear sequence of events.

 

PHSE  -  Our topic for this term is “Medicines and Drugs” and we will be looking at what goes into our bodies, where they go, feeling ill and feeling better, injections and how we can feel good without using medicines and drugs. We will also be learning about ‘Going for Goals’ which focuses on the aspect of motivation and self awareness. These activities will provide the opportunity to value all children’s abilities, qualities and strengths. The children will learn about their strengths as learners and how they learn.

 

RE  

Messengers/Witnesses- The children will learn about messages being carried by different people and in different ways. They will learn about Pentecost: the gift of the Holy Spirit and the friends of Jesus giving the Easter message.

 

Change-The children will know and understand when and how people need to change. They will learn that people who met Jesus changed their lives.

 

Treasures- The children will learn about what is treasured by different people and why. They will begin to know and understand about God’s treasures- the world and its people.
