Year 4 Curriculum Newsletter  - Summer Term

 

In Literacy this term, we will be looking at stories from other cultures, stories by the same author and stories that raise issues and dilemmas. This will be followed by reading and writing poems in different forms: Japanese poetry, alphabet poems and shape poems.  Our Non-fiction focus will be becoming familiar with the content and structure of persuasive texts, such as persuasive letter writing and advertising.

 

In Numeracy, our focus will be –using symbols correctly including < (less than) > (greater than) and = equals, rounding any whole number less than 1000 to the nearest 10 or 100, adding and subtracting any pair of two digit whole numbers, refine written methods for + and -, problem solving, use units of length, mass and capacity, reflective symmetry, use eight compass directions, angles, multiplication and division, simple fractions and decimals and handling data, e.g frequency/tally charts and bar charts. Many topics will be linked to everyday situations.

 

In Science we will be focusing on conductors and insulators of electricity and insects and animals living in different habitats. The children will be carrying out investigations to be able to make conclusions from their findings.

 

In ICT the children will be learning how to use and construct branching data bases. This unit of work will fit in with their ‘Habitats’ topic as they will be using this type of database to identify insects.

 

In Geography we will be looking at St. Lucia as an underdeveloped community and the similar and different ways of life. We will make comparisons with things such as their schools and our schools; what they do in their leisure time etc.

 

In Art we will be creating dreams using a variety of techniques. The children look at Aboriginal art and how the Aborigines use atr to tell a story.

 

In Design and Technology we will be making alarms using circuits in electricity

 

In P.E, the children will be concentrating on bowling and fielding skills in rounders and using the rules for rounders to play games. The children will also be doing athletics and improving their throwing, jumping and running skills.

 

In Music the children will be exploring singing games. They will be mainly focusing on skipping and clapping games.

The four topics this term are:Judaism, Holidays/Holydays, Building Bridges and Difference.

 

Judaism

In this topic the children will learn how the Jewish people express their love of God. They will also find out about the importance of the Torah.

 

Holidays/Holydays

In this topic, the children explore holidays and holydays that mark new beginnings in their lives and in life in general. They hear about Pentecost, celebrating the new life the Spirit brings and the birthday of the Church.

 

Building Bridges

In this topic, the children explore their experience of friendships that last and those that don’t. They learn that friendships that last need to be worked at. They hear about how important it is to admit wrong and to be reconciled with each other and God.

 

Difference

In this topic, the children explore difference as richness and as challenge. They hear about saints who show people what God is like, but who are very different from each other. Each gives a glimpse of the wonder of God.

 

  The children will also be taking part in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
