ST. JOHN BOSCO CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL

Admission Policy
Admission Policy and Arrangements 2008
St. John Bosco Catholic Primary School is a Catholic Primary School situation in the Archdiocese of Liverpool and is maintained by Sefton Local Authority.
The Governing Body of the school is responsible for determining and administering the policy relating to the admission of pupils to the school. It is guided in that responsibility by:-
- The requirements of the law
- The advice of the Archdiocesan Trustees on the nature and purpose of its duties
- Its duty towards the school and the Catholic community it serves
- The Catholic character of the school and its Mission Statement
- Recognition of the Parish boundary
The school serves in the first instance baptised Catholic children in public care and those living in the Parishes of:
St. Gregory’s and Our Lady’s Parishes, Lydiate
Having consulted with the Local Authority and others in accordance with the requirements of the law, the Governing Body has published its admissions limit at 25 pupils for the school year commencing September 2008.
Applications for a place at the school must be made on the enclosed school admission form (white form) and local authority form (yellow) and returned to school no later than 20th October 2006.
The Governing Body has delegated responsibility for determining admissions to its Admissions Committee, which will consider all applications made in accordance with the criteria set out in Admission Criteria.
Pupils who are admitted to the school will enter the reception class on 10th September 2008.
As required by the law the Governing Body will not admit more than 30 pupils to any one reception or infant class.
Parents may wish to know that the number of applications received last year was 27 and that 27 were admitted.
Admissions Criteria
Where the number of applications exceeds the number of places available the Governing Body will apply the following over-subscriptions criteria:
- Baptised Catholic looked after children.
- Baptised Catholic children who have a brother or sister at the school at the time of likely admission. This includes full, half or step-brothers and sisters, and foster brothers and sisters who are living at the same address and are part of the same family unit.
- Baptised Catholic children belonging to the Parishes of St. Gregory's and Our Lady's, Lydiate. Proof of a birth date in the form of a Birth Certificate and proof of Baptism in the form of a Baptismal Certificate is required (unless baptised in the Parishes of St Gregory's or Our Lady's Lydiate.)
- Baptised Catholic children from other Catholic Parishes.
- Looked after children who are other than Catholic.
- Children who are other than Catholic who have a brother or sister at the school at the time of likely admission. This includes full, half or step-brothers and sisters, and foster brothers and sisters who are living at the same address and are part of the same family unit.
- If after considering applications made which meet any of the above criteria or a combination of one or more of the same, there remains a shortfall in the planned parents of children of other Christian denominations, it would be necessary for such parents to have expressed a genuine desire for them to be educated in a Catholic school and to be fully supportive of its Catholic ethos, (Such applications would need to be supported, in writing, by the appropriate Minister of Religion.
- Children of other faiths whose parents demonstrate a commitment to the ethos of the school.
- Children whose parents express a preference for a place at the school.
In the event of any over subscription in the number of applications made under any of the categories above then the admissions committee will offer places first to children living nearest to the school measured by the shortest walking distance using public highways.
Note
The Governing Body reserve the right to admit children with proven and exceptional medical and social needs where admission to the school might best help satisfy those exceptional needs, providing that such application is submitted with appropriate evidence or reports from a doctor or social worker.
Admission Arrangements
All applications will be considered at the same time and after the closing date, 20th October 2007 agreed by the Admissions Committee.
Parents will be informed of the decision of the Admissions Committee no later than 7th April 2008. If their application has been successful they are required to confirm acceptance of the offer of a place by 30th April 2007.
If the application has not been successful the letter will give reasons for the decision and will inform parents of their right of appeal and give guidance on how that appeal should be made.
A waiting list for children who have not been offered a place will be kept and will be ranked according to the Admissions Criteria; parents will be informed of their child’s position on the waiting list which will not be operated for longer than the end of the first term of Reception.
